Was God ever a kid?

As he was getting ready for school this morning, my 5 year old asked me:

“Was God ever a kid?”

I felt an urge to correct him and then I suppressed my urge.

“What do you mean, Jacob?”

“Dad, was God a kid before anything was invented?”

I didn’t know how to answer him. You see, Becky and I have made a decision not to educate the children about God - primarily in a ‘mind’ or ‘informational’ way. We want them to experience God and know Him in their hearts.

So, I didn't give my boy a theological pat answer. I told him that Jesus was a baby and said, “What do you think, Jacob?” Then his mum called him to brush his teeth and get his shoes on to go to school.

Was God ever a kid (a child) before anything was invented (created)? He is the source of all and the Father. God is revealed as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. True….but…

God holds the universe together…but the Trinity is also totally childlike. The Trinity lives from the heart in playful abandon. The Trinity has never grown out of mutual inter-dependence. God created out of His childlike delight and exuberance. Yes, He did!

Jesus said, “Unless you become as little children you cannot enter the kingdom of God.”

The kingdom of God only works for the childlike in heart. The wise and prudent cannot see it or receive the things that the Father reveals.

Was God ever a kid? Well, we all know, of course, that God is beyond all that…but, not so quick. Wait!

I am glad I didn't default into trying to ‘educate’ my child on the level of sophisticated adult intellect. The next time you hear a child saying something about God— pause. Open your heart and your perception to the childlike way of seeing. I guarantee you will receive something.
